Lot #3
George Bush

Bush serves up a politically incorrect broccoli anecdote to Phyllis Diller: “My courageous statement on broccoli won the vote of every four-year-old in the land. When the broccoli trucks rolled into the White House, Barbara was asked, ‘What are you going to do with all that broccoli?’ Barbara said, ‘We are giving it to the homeless.’ John Sununu said, ‘Why do you think they left home in the first place?’”

Description

Bush serves up a politically incorrect broccoli anecdote to Phyllis Diller: “My courageous statement on broccoli won the vote of every four-year-old in the land. When the broccoli trucks rolled into the White House, Barbara was asked, ‘What are you going to do with all that broccoli?’ Barbara said, ‘We are giving it to the homeless.’ John Sununu said, ‘Why do you think they left home in the first place?’”

TLS, one page, 4.5 x 6.5, personal letterhead, January 29, 2004. Bush sends a humorous letter to the comedienne in which he jokes about his broccoli-specific notoriety. In full: “Okay—you had to be the one to tell me that ‘people are eating their broccoli.’ When I was President, I didn’t have many memorable quotations; but my courageous statement on broccoli won the vote of every four-year-old in the land. When the broccoli trucks rolled into the White House, Barbara was asked, ‘What are you going to do with all that broccoli?’ Barbara said, ‘We are giving it to the homeless.’ John Sununu said, ‘Why do you think they left home in the first place?’ Love from all Bushes.” One of the least significant—but most memorable—events of the Bush administration was the revelation that the President despised broccoli. The hated vegetable soon became a lasting emblem of the Bush presidency, much as jellybeans were for Ronald Reagan and peanuts were for Jimmy Carter. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with usual mailing fold. R&R COA.
