Union general renowned for burning Atlanta during his relentless March to the Sea. War dated endorsement, signed “W. T. Sherman,” written at the bottom of a letter to Sherman concerning a military appointment. The letter, written by William Arthur from St. Louis on July 11, 1861, reads, in part, “I enclosed a copy of a letter from General E. A. Hitchcock of this city commending me to your notice as a candidate for an appointment as Lieutenant in some one of the new regiments of the U. S. Army and especially in your own…Should you favor my application & desire to communicate with me on the subject, a letter addressed to me at St. Louis care of Prof. Wm. Chauvenet, will reach me.” Sherman writes underneath, “I have no personal acquaintance with the writer, but he is highly spoken of by a Gentleman in whom I have confidence. W. T. Sherman.” Double matted with an engraved seated portrait of Sherman, to an overall size of 21 x 15.75.
