Description

Secretary of State Adams writes to President Monroe from London: “Private!...I incline to the opinion, that they should be in general terms...enjoining them, the utmost vigilance, and caution to preserve the public interest from imposition.”

Interesting LS, one page both sides, 8 x 9.5, with content relating to political appointments in St. Augustine, Florida Territory, and a Resolution in the House of Representatives. It’s unclear which Hose Resolution Adams is referring to , as the congressional docket on May 26, 1824 was particularly full. In part: “I propose to you the appointment of W.H. Allen as Commissioner of Land Titles at St. Augustine, in the place of Mr. Worthington who has declined. I enclose the recommendations of Mr. Allen. I likewise enclose drafts of letters to W. Reynolds and Antonio Alvares, and to W. Reynolds, keeper of the archives, separately directing them to deliver up the archives to Edward Gibson and William Simmons, the persons recommended by W. Hamilton; and a letter to Messrs. Gibson and Simmons, to receive them, with instructions what they are to do with them, conformably to Mr. Hamilton’s suggestions. With regard to the Instructions to be give to the Commissioners as the Resolution of the House of Representatives of 26 May, requesting the President to give such Instructions was not acted upon by the Senate, I incline to the opinion, that they should be in general terms, referring them to the Reports of Messrs. Floyd and Blair, and to that of Mr. Hamilton, and enjoining them, the utmost vigilance, and caution to preserve the public interest from imposition. The Department from which these Instructions might regularly to go is the Treasury; and unless by your directions, I could not draw them up, without intruding upon its duties. It is important that the Instructions should be given without delay - I submit the whole subject to your determination. I am with the highest respect, Dear Sir, your very obedt. sevt., …” Very dark and clear signature. In very good condition, with scattered toning, a dark area of discoloration to the upper left corner not obscuring any of the text, a small hole about two thirds down that also does not obscure any text. R&R COA.
