(as written on the inside of the front cover), filled with the signatures of 184, including two American presidents, a vice-president, generals, dignitaries, members of the judicial branch, an attorney general, a solicitor general, and more. Included: on the very first page, the large, bold signature of U.S. Grant [as President], which he dates “Dec. 19, 1871,” with the signature “Horace Porter, Brig. General U.S. Army” beneath; J[ames]A. Garfield; “Geo. H. Williams, Atty. Genl”; B.H. Held, Solicitor General”; B.K. Goodyear; Herbert Hoover (on a smaller sheet affixed to the page) with the signature of his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, on a White House card affixed beneath; Schuyler Colfax; C.H. Van Wyck; H.H. Starkweather; Nathan F. Dixon; Stevenson Archer; Austin Blair; Henry C. Spencer and many others. In overall very good condition, with the front cover loose from the book, several loose pages, ink notations in another hand on some signature pages, wear to the cover, expected age toning and scattered small areas of trivial soiling.
