Description

This letter may be the key in ultimately deciding if Albert DeSalvo was indeed the Boston Strangler - Perhaps the single most controversial letter relating to the Boston Strangler case, with DeSalvo stating “The Boston Strangler has never been caught!...Nothing in that book can be used in a court of law to try me as the Boston Strangler! That killed them. They tried to trap me and it backfired on them.”

ALS signed “Al,” eight pages on two sets of adjoining lightly-lined sheets, 4.75 x 8, March 1, 1973. DeSalvo opens up about his criminal background and his escape from Bridgewater State hospital, comments on his penpal’s boyfriend and leaves many unanswered questions regarding his role in the Boston Strangler case. In part, “Let’s make it clear; the Boston Strangler has never been caught! Nor has he as the book said, confessed! I will include a poem I wrote! That tells the whole story as it is today. Viv, I went to the police seeking help. I went in on my own. I didn’t receive any help, but was put in a dirty cell for two & a half years, never seeing a doctor, then I escaped in Feb. 24 67 from Bridgewater so called State Hospital. Then I was sent here. At a later time, I will explain in detail, what happened to make me stop and give myself up. Vivian what do you think of the letter on page 275 that ended on page 277 I wrote to my ex-wife? So that you understand, nothing in that book can be used in a court of law to try me as the Boston Strangler! That killed them. They tried to trap me and it back-fired on them. I knew what they didn’t know. I was honest and sincere, seeking proper help. And being two-faced, the police not understanding a person with a true medical problem, only interested in putting people in prison. They are now very embarrassed. As a matter of fact the whole state of Mass. is red faced! On how Albert DeSalvo case was mishandled! Now it’s my turn, to tell the whole true story, and a lot of heads are going to fall. .My wife is what triggered me off. I was going to write and tell you, of my early childhood life. However, because of the amount of sex involved and at the time you being just 16 yrs, I felt at that time I shouldn’t. However, knowing you better…if you care to know what happened at age 7 on, remember it’s shocking, it had to be it made a boy into the Boston S., must I say any more? Once you know what took place in my young years you will have a true and better understanding of your Al. You must ask me to explain…or I will not write it in any letter to you. I don’t like talking about it.” Accompanied by the original cerified mailing envelope, addressed in DeSalvo’s hand. In fine condition. This letter may be the key in ultimately deciding if Albert DeSalvo was indeed the Boston Strangler. R&R COA.
