Asked to fire Archibald Cox, Ruchelshaus tenders his resignation to President Nixon because “My disagreement with that action at this time is too fundamental to permit me to act otherwise.”

Souvenir typescript of Ruckelshaus’ resignation submitted when he refused to carry out President Nixon’s order to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox at the height of the Watergate crisis. In part: “Dear Mr. President, It is with deep regret that I tender my resignation. You have honored me with four appointments, I have found the challenge of working in the high levels of American Government an unforgettable and rewarding experience. I am, of course, Sorry that my conscience will not permit me to carry out your instruction to discharge Archibald Cox. My disagreement with that action at this time is too fundamental to permit me to act otherwise.” Signed “William D. Ruckelshaus” in blue ink at the conclusion. R&R COA.
