Passport for a “destitute American stewardess” desiring to return to America, signed twice by Hawthorne as US Consul

Author of Twice Told Tales, The Scarlet Letter, and The House of the Seven Gables. DS, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, July 4, 1855. Partially printed passport which reads, in part: “I, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Consul of the United States of America, for the Port of Liverpool and its dependencies, do certify that I have sent on board the ship Neptune, E.W. Peabody, Master, Mary Devon, a destitute American stewardess, desirous of returning home, for whom Passage the said Master has been paid Ten dollars in conformity with the fourth chapter and fourth section of Consular Instructions.” The document then goes on to list her age, height, complexion and she then signs her name. “Given under my hand and seal of office at Liverpool, this 4th day of July, Nath. Hawthorne.” Hawthorne signs again in the lower right. The document is also signed by the Neptune’s master, Peabody. The pale blue seal is still intact. In good condition, with some show through from writing of an inspector on the reverse, toning, separations at the folds, some brushing to Hawthorne’s signature, a few chips to the left edge.
