Darwin chuckles over poor French: “Very many thanks for the newspapers, which have amused us and perplexes us who the author could have been. What difficult French the gentleman writes & some of the clippings no one in the house could translate”

Natural scientist who formulated the theory of evolution, a highly controversial stance that challenged the established norms of science and religion. ALS, one page, 4.25 x 7, September 10. In part, “Very many thanks for the newspapers, which have amused us and perplexes us who the author could have been. What difficult French the gentleman writes & some of the clippings no one in the house could translate. I am very glad that York answered so brilliantly.” He adds a short postscript along the left margin, in full: “The paper shall be forwarded tomorrow.” Archively double matted and framed with a photo to an overall size of 15 x 12.5.
