Colonel Davis writes to President Polk concerning a commission for a lieutenant in the Dragoons: “No officer of the Regt. more distinguished himself in the battle of Monterrey and he was noticed for gallantry and good conduct in two reports which I had the honor to make on that occasion.”

President of the Confederacy. ALS signed “Jeffer. Davis, Col. Mi. Rifles,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, February 8, 1847. Letter to President James K. Polk. In full, “I have the honor to enclose an application of Lieut. Patterson for a commission in the Dragoons, New. Regt. Mr. P. is well qualified for cavalry service being a good horseman and a bold enterprising partisan. No officer of the Regt. more distinguished himself in the battle of Monterrey and he was noticed for gallantry and good conduct in two reports which I had the honor to make on that occasion. I requested our friend S. Adams M. C. of Mi. to present Mr. P. for a commission in the unit of any new Rgts. being raised. In forwarding his application I feel great confidence that he will fulfil [sic] the highest expectations should you be pleased to grant his request.” Nicely cloth matted and framed with a transcript of the letter, an engraved portrait and a small biographical plaque, to an overall size of 25 x 25. In fine condition, with mild toning and expected folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
