While recovering from his own illness, Gerry writes to another sick friend, “I regret exceedingly the indisposition of your affectionate father, of that my letter, which was of little consequence, was delivered him; but should have produced exertions which might injure him.”

Signer of the Declaration of Independence, vice-president under Madison in 1813, and the man for whom the gerrymander was named. ALS signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, July 1, 1808. Letter to a family friend. In part, “I regret exceedingly the indisposition of your affectionate father, of that my letter, which was of little consequence, was delivered him; but should have produced exertions which might injure him. I flatter myself however that his health will soon be restored…I feel sensibly the effects of my illness, yet I hope soon to recover my strength.” In very good condition, with light overall toning, some creasing, and mailing folds.
