Description

Hand addressed Custer envelope to General Fitz Hugh Lee

Mailing envelope, 6 x 3.5, with the first line addressed in Custer’s hand to “Gen. Fitz Hugh Lee,” nephew of Robert E. Lee. No year on the April 19 postmark, but provenance notes that it was from 1876, about two months before Little Big Horn. Lee has made a pencil annotation to top corner. Envelope is affixed to a piece of heavy black stock, along with a nice photo of Custer, to an overall size of 8 x 12. Lee was a Major General 1st Virginia Cavalry who fought at Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania, Governor of Virginia, and Robert E. Lee’s nephew. In very good condition, with scattered soiling and toning, paper loss to top left edge and light creasing. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from a collector who obtained the envelope from a Lee family descendant. Letter is affixed to the back of a framing board. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
