Lot #611
Thornton Wilder

Wilder offers to anonymously edit a play, “I write this directly to you rather than Mrs. Rieser, partly because I have found that that kind of effort to be helpful on MSS is always best when it is done impersonally (I did it on a play for the late Ernest Toller, and in a number of other cases).”

Description

Wilder offers to anonymously edit a play, “I write this directly to you rather than Mrs. Rieser, partly because I have found that that kind of effort to be helpful on MSS is always best when it is done impersonally (I did it on a play for the late Ernest Toller, and in a number of other cases).”

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and playwright; The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Our Town, etc. ALS, one page both sides, 6.25 x 8, personal letterhead, March 21, 1940. Wilder offers to anonymously edit a play for a writer he does not know. In part, “I shall be very glad indeed to read Mrs. Rieser’s play and make (light) pencilled notation on the margins…I write this directly to you rather than Mrs. Rieser, partly because I have found that that kind of effort to be helpful on MSS is always best when it is done impersonally (I did it on a play for the late Ernest Toller, and in a number of other cases - and each time in the atmosphere of exile-psychology ‘situations’ arose - involving the translator and the future or potential producers); and partly to save Mrs. Reiser the formalities of thanks and covering letters.” In fine condition. R&R COA.
