A professor of English at Wellesley, she wrote the poem America the Beautiful in 1893 while on a trip to Colorado. It was first published in The Congregationalist in 1895, and subsequently underwent several changes. The version as we know it, the one printed here, was written by Bates in 1913. Printed four page poem, 5.25 x 6.5, of America The Beautiful, signed “Katharine Lee Bates” in fountain pen at the bottom of the first page beneath the poem, and inscribed “With best wishes to Charles Orin” by Bates at the upper right of the first page. The remaining pages constitute an essay about the poem written by Bates. Unbound, as issued, Wellesley, circa 1925. Crisp signature and inscription.
