Novelist Henry James writes from The Mount: “I…rejoice to know that the…story gave you pleasure”

Novelist, he began writing essays for Atlantic Monthly before expanding to novels. His theme was often the difference between Americans and Europeans, as illustrated in The Portrait of a Lady and Daisy Miller. He also wrote over one hundred short stories, including The Turn of the Screw. ALS in his large, sprawling hand, four pages on adjoining 4 x 6.25 sheets, The Mount, Lenox, Mass. letterhead, October 19. In part: “Dear Miss Carlazzo, I thank you very kindly for your graceful note and rejoice to know that the book, or rather the story gave you pleasure.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, in James’ hand, with a postmark on the reverse of October 20, 1904 as well as an unsigned photograph of the author. In fine condition, with a bit of smudging to a few letters of the text and to the first letter of the very large signature. R&R COA.
