Description

Ford reiterates his decision not to run for reelection: “I believe our country is in very deep trouble...I have determined that I can best help that cause by not being a candidate for President...Both Betty and I are very satisfied with our decision and feel it to be the very best course of action at this time”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 27, 1980. After deciding not to run for President, Ford thanks a supporter for his tireless efforts. In part, “During the last three weeks the possibility of a Ford candidacy created a great deal of excitement and even a greater amount of hard work…My decision, as I said, was the most difficult one of my life. I hope that you can understand how deliberately and thoroughly every facet of a possible candidacy was considered. As I said in my statement, ‘…I believe our country is in very deep trouble.’ ‘…I have determined that I can best help that cause by not being candidate for President…’ Both Betty and I are very satisfied with our decision and feel it to be the very best course of action at this time. We would not feel so confident had we not received the help of a large number of wonderful people at a most difficult time in our lives.” In fine condition. R&R COA.
