Description

Ediosn’s patent application for “new and useful Improvements in Process of duplicating Phonograms,” signed with his seldom-seen “Thomas Alva Edison”

DS, one page, 8 x 13, August 24, 1888. Petition to the Commissioner of Patents, Ottawa, reads, in part: “The petition of Thomas Alva Edison…showeth…That he has invented new and useful Improvements in Process of duplicating Phonograms, not known or used by others before his invention thereof, and not being in public use or on sale, for more than one year previous to his application, in Canada, with his consent or allowance as such inventor. your petitioner therefore prays that a patent may be granted to him for the said invention, as set forth in the specification in duplicate sent herewith, and for the purposes of the Patent act your petitioner elects his domicile in the City of Ottawa, province of Ontario.” The petition is is boldly and beautifully signed in full, “Thomas Alva Edison” at the conclusion. In very good condition, with three horizontal folds with lengthy separations which have been repaired on the reverse with adhesive tape, scattered light creasing, scattered small areas of discoloration, a few office pencil and red ink notations and (one crossing out the words “of 1872” after “…the Patent Act”), three small file holes at top, none of which affect the terrific signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
