Description

The fathers of atomic science: Einstein and Fermi

Einstein was a German theoretical physicist who is widely regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. He proposed the theory of relativity and also made major contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. While studying the creation of artificially radioactive isotopes in the 1930s, Fermi became the first physicist to split the atom and was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1938 for his developments in harnessing nuclear power. He is considered one of the most important architects of the nuclear age. Lot of two TLS. TLS, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, dated April 19, 1952, on his personal letterhead. Letter is to a gentleman in New York and reads in full, “The statement you have quoted is genuine. It shows already that I am not able to answer your question.” Second letter is a TLS, signed “E. Fermi,” one page, 8.5 x 11, dated February 16, 1953, University of Chicago letterhead. Fermi politely declines an invitation. In full, “Thank you for your letter of February 10th and for the invitation to present a symposium with Dr. Urey at your meeting of March 22nd. I regret very much that a previous engagement makes it impossible for me to accept.” Expected folds to both letters, some mild toning and a pencil notation to Einstein letter and a partial fold separation and mounting remnants to reverse of Fermi’s letter, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
