In declining health and a year from death, Lee flatters a Southern lass: “I have rec’d…an essay written by your daughter which exhibits much thought in a lady of her age, & I hope she may return from her European tour advanced in all you desire her to posess”

Commander of the Confederate Armies during the Civil War who surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. ALS signed “R. E. Lee,” one lined page, 5 x 8, September 21, 1869. Letter to Mrs. Mary Matthews. In full, “I have rec’d your letter of the 10th transmitting an essay written by your daughter which exhibits much thought in a lady of her age, & I hope she may return from her European tour advanced in all you desire her to posess, & find her mother improved in health.” Letter has been professionally silked on the reverse. In very good condition, with overall toning from previous display, a bit darker to the edges and a small crease near bottom. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
