Fantastic lot of five one page letters, ranging in size from 5 x 8.5 to 8 x 10, written by Confederate soldiers. Letters provide interesting insight on the Confederate life. A sample, written by John F. Wilkerson, in part: “I had just returned from the Rear of the Yankee Army, where I procure many articles needed by Brother and myself. Our raid was successful beyond all precedent; we accomplished everything we wished to, and intended - brought back 90 wagons - 500 mules, 150 prisoners, and destroyed valuable stores…I was very fortunate in getting out safe-captured 2 Yankees (1 officer) and procured from the spoils brought out valuable clothing worth 1800$ - all new.” Another letter, signed by H. M. Cannon from Camp Du Bose in South Carolina, reads in part, “It is out of my power to give you permission to stay after your furlough is out...I only wish I could give you permission to stay but if I do it will cause dissatisfaction among the men in the company and moreover it will have a demoralizing effect with the men. Col. Graham is acting as Brig. Genl, he is now in command of the Brigade as Genl. Hagood is off on furlough...Do your best to raise a small company of Squad (I). There is nothing new in Camps. Lieut. Chappell sends his respects...I will give you a (20) twenty days furlough on every recruit you get me.” An extremely interesting look into their lives on the front lines. Full transcripts of each letter are available. In very good condition, with typical age wear and creasing. R&R COA.
