Description

Musical arrangements...in Coltrane’s hand

Saxophonist, bandleader and musician. In the 1950s, he played tenor and soprano sax with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. In the 1960s he led his own groups and forever changed jazz with his brilliant experimentation and improvisation. His later recordings reflected his belief that music was a form of spiritual expression. His recordings include Giant Steps, My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme. He died of liver cancer at the age of 41 in 1967. Handwritten incomplete arrangements on staved manuscript folio, 9.5 x 12.25, with an incomplete score written in pencil on the front and on the reverse of the four page folio. The word “alto” is also written in pencil at the top of the the sheet. The arrangement was written for King Kolax, a bandleader with whom John Coltrane worked in the 1950s and was originally consigned by the Coltrane Family to Guernsey’s Auction (and, as such, bears a 2005 Jowcol Music copyright stamp). In very good condition, with scattered small areas of discoloration and toning, creasing at the edges and corners, mild edge wear. COA Roger Epperson/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
