DS, signed at the conclusion “R. E. Lee” as Bvt. Col., Commanding Dept., one page, 5 x 8, October 30, 1860, Head Quarters, Department of Texas, San Antonio letterhead. Military orders to follow the instructions of the Secretary of War restricting “the expenditures within the Department to...all repairs, alterations and improvement at Posts for which special appropriations have not been made.” The orders also add that “forage to horses and mules will be reduced to one-half the forage ration, and that the animals be spared from all labor not actually necessary and be grazed as much as possible.” Lee was with Albert Sidney Johnston's Second Cavalry regiment in Texas from March 1856 to October 1857 and again from February 1860 to February 1861. During that time, Lee also went to Washington to administer the estate of his deceased father-in-law. Lee remained with his family until February 13, 1860, and then returned to San Antonio to assume command of his regiment.
