Vintage 7 x 5.25 original photo of Wilbur Wright’s flight over France at Camp d’Auvours, Le Mans on October 7, 1908. Signed on the mount in fountain pen, “Yours truly, Wilbur Wright.” Lower left of mount also signed “Compliments of Hart O. Berg,” who was aboard the actual flight, and was the Wright Brothers agent in Europe to sell their aircraft. On the same day this photo was taken, Berg’s wife Madeline was the first woman to go up in a “heavier-than-air-machine.” In 1908 and 1909, Wilbur demonstrated Wright aircraft in Europe, and Orville flew in Fort Meyer, Virginia. The flights went well until Orville lost a propeller and crashed, breaking his leg and killing his passenger Lt. Thomas Selfridge. While Orville recuperated, Wilbur kept flying in France, breaking record after record. Orville and his sister Kate eventually joined Wilbur in France, and the three returned home to Dayton to an elaborate homecoming celebration. Archivally suede matted and framed with an informational plaque about the day’s flight, to an overall size of 14.5 x 19.5. In fine condition, with a few light surface marks to photo, a small tear to bottom edge of photo, not affecting image. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
