Description

French playwright and novelist, the illegitimate son of Three Musketeers author Alexandre Dumas père. Dumas fils gained fame first as a novelist, but after two of his works were successfully adapted for the stage he devoted himself to primarily to playwriting, concentrating on moralizing plays aimed at the reform of social evils such as prostitution and illegitimacy. His most popular play, Camille, forms the basis of Verdi's opera La Traviata. ALS in French, signed “A. Dumas,” one page, 5 x 8, no date. In part: “...I can only repeat what I have already written to you. I do not have the time for sitting neither in Paris where I am busy with rehearsals, nor in [?] from where I leave early in the morning...my most distinguished wishes.”. In fine condition, with edge toning, a couple of small areas of trivial soiling, a vertical fold through a letter of the signature. R&R COA.
