Description

Brahms modestly arranges an audition for a “musically very talented” singer

ALS in German, signed “J. Brahms,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 9, January 1874. Letter to a gentleman. In full, “For some time now, Mrs. Adele Passy-Cornet, here, is urging me to write to you a few commendable words about her. She would like very much to audition for you. In that connection I should note that nine years ago she sang here in “Christ on the Mount” and other pieces with much success. Meantime, several of our other leading female theater vocalists established themselves here and that is why I did not hear her sing recently. However, you probably are, just as I am, well aware of the fact that the entire Cornet family is musically very talented. I also think, the lady is well known within your own circle of acquaintances who will be able tell you more about her and I am just adding in all modesty my humble opinion. For all its worth, I suggest you also approach P. personally in that connection.” In very good condition, with two small tape remnants to left edge, writing from opposing side showing through, and a typed transcription attached to the integral page. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
