Description

Buck responds to questions from a reader at a seminary: ”...Men and women join churches sometimes without any real spiritual change and for reasons which have nothing to do with religion...”

Pulitzer prize winning author, active in American civil rights and women's rights activities. She published essays in both Crisis, the journal of the NAACP, and Opportunity, the magazine of the Urban League; she was a trustee of Howard University for twenty years. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 19, 1954. A reply to one of her readers, a seminarian, who has, apparently, asked several questions about her book, God’s Men. In part: “I realize that there were characters such as Bump’s and Clem’s who were left more or less unfinished…Frankly a book gets too long to complete as entirely as the author wishes…. Men and women join churches sometimes without any real spiritual change and for reasons which have nothing to do with religion…I am sure, too, that the opinions expressed by characters in a book are not those of the author….” In fine condition, with some edge toning and faint scattered creasing. R&R COA.
