Description

Bizet’s good manners emerge even in sadness: “But I don’t want to put off any longer thanking you for the two tickets. You made two people happy”

Composer. Although he won the Prix de Rome in 1857 with Le Docteur Miracle, his efforts to achieve a reputation as an operatic composer were largely unsuccessful. His masterpiece was the four-act opera Carmen, completed just before his untimely death from heart disease. ALS in French, one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. Bizet cancels a meeting with a friend but sends his thanks. In part, “Charles will tell you about the sad circumstances that prevents me from seeing you today. But I don’t want to put off any longer thanking you for the two tickets. You made two people happy.” Several creases and folds, none affecting legibility and a touch of light toning, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
