Berlioz exhibits a flair for business, writing to his publisher: “How are sales for King Lear and Napoleon going? You must advertise everything that we’ve published together, even the romances and other miseries”

French composer dedicated to the creation and dissemination of new styles of music. ALS in French, signed “H. Berlioz,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, November 9, 1840. Letter to his publisher Adolphe Catelin. In part, “You know that in order to deal with other publishers I need your authorization that I’m free to do so…This doesn’t mean that I’m renouncing the pleasure of dealing with you when I find work that might suit you. How are sales for KingLear and Napoleon going? You must advertise everything that we’ve published together, even the romances and other miseries. The public cannot be expected to make guesses.” Second integral page bears an address leaf in Berlioz’s hand. In very good condition, with expected folds, a few wrinkles, small amount of paper loss to integral second page from wax seal, and writing from opposing sides showing through slightly.
