ALS in German, one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, January 1, 1876. In this letter, Wagner discusses the financial negotiations between his executive board and the Austrian bass-baritone Emil Scaria (1838-1886) whom he was trying to hire to appear in the very first Bayreuth Festival (Richard Wagner Festival). The driving force behind the composer’s vision for the Festival was the ability to perform his operas in a perfectly ideal situation, according to his own standards. To this end, he chose the site at Bayreuth for its beauty and for its location away from the distraction of large cities. The Bayreuth Festival opened ini 1876 and was a socio-cultural phenomenon. The festival was plagued by financial problems in its early years but was generously supported by Kind Ludwig II of Bavaria. Despite Wagner’s original intentions, the Festival presents performances only of Wagner’s works, usually Parsifal, the “Ring” cycle and one other work. Currently, there is a ten year waiting period for tickets to the festival. Scaria originated the role of Gurnemanz in Parsifal. Translated, in full: “My dearest friend! I heard that Scaria published the response he received from my administrative council regarding his monetary claims. A publication, unfortunately recounting these claims completely inaccurately. Mr. Scaria claimed 7,500 Reichsmark for the month of August, as well as 250 Mark for each day of July. You personally know very well how highly I appreciate true talent and that I absolutely would not be able to evaluate in monetary terms his performance. On the other hand, especially you understood very well that for my rather risky endeavors in this connection, it is absolutely essential for me to deal in an open manner with the entire cast. In that light, I would feel guilty of having committed a serious injustice towards all the artists who stood by my side with true dedication, if I showed submissiveness on my part towards an individual who decides to put himself on a separate footing. I am informing you of all this to prevent that you may possibly start doubting my integrity. Furthermore, I am also hoping friend Scaria will take to heart my objections I recently voiced in confidence and show his inclination to reconsider the true relationship existing between us. If he should deem to make good the injustice leveled against my person, he perhaps will feel compelled letting the truth be known and correct the inaccurate reports according to which his compensation in Bayreuth was reduced by [?] over three months. Still, I am always hoping for the best! In particular I trust I can count on your loyalty, as well as on your beautiful talent, which is growing ever dearer to me! These greetings for the New Year are not only intended for you but equally for your most distinguished husband. Hoping to see you soon.” Accompanied by the complete English translation. In fine condition, with adhesive residue to the left margin, a one inch separation to the horizontal fold, repaired on the reverse, a few faint scattered creases, faint pencil notation in another hand in the upper right corner.
