Description

Secretary of War Jefferson Davis informs a captain of his promotion, years before switching sides to lead the Confederacy

DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, War Department letterhead, March 20, 1855. One page fold over document signed by Jefferson Davis. The document regards a military appointment for Frederick T. Dent. The partially printed and handwritten document reads, in part: “You are hereby informed that the President of the United States has appointed you Captain in the Ninth Regiment of Infantry (authorized by the Act, approved March 3, 1855, Section 8)…You will receive further instructions from the Adjutant General of the Army.” The document has been signed “Jefferson Davis” in black ink directly above his printed title, Secretary of War. A former member of both the House and Senate, Davis was appointed Secretary of War by Franklin Pierce in 1853, a position he held for the next four year before returning to the Senate. He would later be elected president of the Confederate States, with his inauguration taking place in February 1862. In very good condition, with two horizontal folds, with small separations at their edges and a few minor creases COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
