President Lincoln appoints a Captain of the 16th Regiment

Vellum DS as president, one page, 13.75 x 17.5, August 19, 1861. President Lincoln appoints Robert E. A. Crofton to the rank of Captain in the Sixteenth Regiment of the Infantry. Neatly signed at the conclusion in black ink “Abraham Lincoln” and countersigned by his first Secretary of War Simon Cameron. A quick check of Civil War archives shows Robert E. A. Crofton commanded the 1st Battalion 16th U.S.at the Battle of Chatanooga. In fine condition, with a light horizontal document fold through signature, worn but intact seal, expected folds and impressive vignettes. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
