Explorer, major general, and politician. As an explorer, he mapped the Oregon Trail; as an army officer, he played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War. As a politician, he was the first Republican presidential candidate in 1856. ALS signed “J. C. Fremont,” one page, 8 x 10, May 14, 1850. Fremont belatedly sends a commission. In part, “Agreeably to your request and which I had not observed to be contained in your previous letter, I herewith return to you the commission, apologizing at the same time for having accidentally failed to make an earlier reply.” In fine condition, with expected folds, scattered light soiling and toning and boldly penned text.
