Apache warrior who continually escaped from his captors, leading raiding groups south of the border to further avenge his slaughtered family. When finally captured for good, he was placed on exhibition, continually sending appeals for pardon to Washington. He never received his freedom and one night after too much whiskey, he fell off his horse and lay under a winter's sky until morning. He contracted pneumonia and died. Nice pencil signature, 'Geronimo,' on the reverse of an off-white 6 x 2.5 blank Cherokee National Bank of Vinita check. In fine condition, with a light bisecting vertical crease, four small mounting remnants to reverse and a collector's notation along top edge. A nice addition to any Old West or early American collection. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
