Description

Marxist revolutionary and later virtual dictator of the Soviet Union. After Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin pursued a policy of building 'socialism in one country,' gradually isolating and disgracing his political rivals, most notably Trotsky, who was forced into exile and later assassinated. From 1934-38, he inaugurated a massive purge of the Communist party, government, army, and intelligentsia in which millions of so-called 'enemies of the people' were imprisoned, exiled, or shot. Until his death in 1953, he continued to crush opposition with his repressive measures and belligerent foreign policies, which led to Cold War estrangement from the Western powers. With the fall of Communism under Gorbachev, many of Stalin's victims were rehabilitated and his entire political philosophy was officially condemned by government authorities. DS, in Russian, signed 'J. Stalin,' one page, 8.25 x 11, October 1, 1940. Three article document, with several items crossed out in red pencil, signed at the bottom in pencil by Stalin and one other. Matted and frame with a photo of Stalin and another officer, to an overall size of 19.25 x 16. In fine condition, with some light edge creasing, several folds, pencil notations and some light wrinkling. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
