Description

An AES by Lincoln on an ALS of Charles F. Smith, a Civil War general. In Smith's ALS, he states that he has been aware that a conspiracy has been in operation to have him removed from his command and, while declaring his loyalty to the government, requests copies of allegations against him. At this time, Smith has led the charge against Fort Donelson that was largely responsible for its subsequent surrender. A month after this letter was written, he was advanced to the rank of major general. Lincoln writes "Sent for Gen. McClellan's perusal" and signed with his initials "A.L., Jan. 16, 1862." An unusual form of Lincoln's signature and an interesting look into the political maneuvering at its highest level that was rampant in the army during the Civil War. In very good condition, with partial separation to all fragile folds and some light toning. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
