Description

Lady Emma Hamilton

DS, five pages, 25 x 23, November 18, 1806. Agreement between Hamilton and two men, Francis Giffard and Edward Howard, by which she takes out a loan of 2500 pounds. Document spells out at great length the terms of the loan, stating that as collateral she is using the estate of Merton, left to her in the will of Horatio, Viscount Nelson of the Nile. She is to repay the loan in four annual increments totalling 250 pounds, and each payment must me made personally by her or her assigns to the men or their assigns between the hours of 10:00 am and noon on the four specified days, in the common room of the Lincoln Inn. Lady Emma was also the mistress of Lord Nelson, while the husband of Lord Hamilton. Hamilton left her an annuity of 500 pounds and Nelson left her a lump sum of 2000 pounds, as well as bequeathing his estate. She ran up many debts and the sums left her were not sufficient to support herself and her daughter. Even this loan was not sufficient and Merton was sold from under her and she died in extreme poverty in 1815. In fine condition, with heavy document folds and some minor light soiling.
