DS, signed twice as 'George Herman Ruth,' one page, 8.5 x 11, December 13, 1929. Internal Revenue document entitled 'Agreement as to final determination of tax liability,' between Ruth and the Internal Revenue Service which states 'Whereas, there has been a determination of the tax liability of said taxpayer in respect of Income Tax for the year 1927 in the principal sum of...21,184.97, exclusive of any penalty or interest properly applicable thereto as provided by law.' Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen, 'George Herman Ruth,' and signed again at the bottom under the waiver of restrictions on assessment and collection of deficiency, 'George Herman Ruth.' Document is accompanied by paperwork documenting Ruth's troubles with the IRS during this year. Among accompaniments are: a TLS to Ruth from the Treasury Department, dated January 25, 1929, informing Ruth that he is being audited for his 1927 taxes and assigns him a hearing in New York, complete with the original mailing envelope, another TLS from the IRS, dated September 5, 1929, informing Ruth that he owes an additional 5540.71 in taxes, an unsigned response of protest on Ruth's behalf concerning the IRS September report of Ruth owing additional taxes, mentioning 'the undersigned specifically protests the disallowances of the deduction for contributions of 6042 and the other expenses of 9523, duplicate copies of Ruth's 1927 Federal and New York State income tax forms, indicating Ruth's income of over 104,000.00. Among Ruth's over sources of income include: over 18,000 from First National Pictures, over 22,000 from McLaughlin Manufacturing, 13,333. 75 from royalties from The Christy Walsh Syndicate and over 8,000 from exhibition games. All this is in addition to his 70,000.00 baseball salary. Also included is several handwritten notes (probably in Ruth's accountant's hand) and a typed memo, dated June 26, 1929, mentioning the hearing 'regarding Mr. Ruth's 1927 return. In fine condition, with several office stamps and notations and some paperclip impressions along top edge. This document, signed twice with his rarely-seen full legal signature, is a rare opportunity with fabulous surrounding documentation.
