Sam Houston land grant dated 1836, the year of the Alamo

Attracted to the struggle for Texan independence, he led the Texan army at the battle of San Jacinto and became the first president of the Republic of Texas. After the admission of Texas as a state, he became a senator. He was the governor of Texas, but was deposed when he refused to swear allegiance to the Confederate States of America. DS, signed 'Sam. Houston,' one page, 9.75 x 15.5, Republic Of Texas letterhead, December 20, 1836. Republic of Texas land scrip, issued to Thomas Toby for 'three hundred and twenty acres of the public domain of Texas.' Signed at the bottom in black ink by Houston and counter-signed by the Secretary of the Treasury Henry Smith. In good condition, with a cancellation cut through signature, as well as one through Smith's, several small tape repairs to reverse, light toning and spotting, small area of paper loss to top from premature folding caused by seal, some very light text mirroring and fragile folds.
