In full, 'This will be handed you by Mr. Aaron Wagar who will present you with a power of attorney from S. K. Baron of New Orleans to receive the debt due to the firm of Reynolds and Baron by the estate of William H. Carty. I hope that you have succeeded in obtaining a judgement for the money against the adm. If the money has been collected please pay it over to Mr. Wagar deducting the fees, first taking from him the necessary receipts and causing him to deposit his power of attorney in the archives of that Municipality. If the money has not been collected I will thank you to use every effort and to give Mr. Wagar all the aid in your power in effecting the collection, or in bringing the matter to a speedy adjustment. Moreland was a soldier and jurist of the Republic of Texas. On April 17, 1835 he became one of the four signers of the Liberty Resolutions, which called on Texans to respect the laws of Mexico and refrain from resisting the payment of customs duties. In October 1835, Moreland joined the Texas army and on December 20, 1835, General Sam. Houston appointed Moreland a captain of the First Regiment of Infantry in the regular army. After San Jacinto, Moreland was assigned to command of Fort Travis at Galveston. In 1840, President Lamar appointed him chief justice of the Second Judicial District, a post he held until his death.
