Description

A leader in Congress among the opponents of slavery and instrumental in the impeachment proceedings against President Johnson. LS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75 lightly lined paper, March 17, 1873. An invitation to Virginia Vaughn, an accomplished reader and lecturer, to deliver her lecture on 'The Poetry of the Future' in Washington, D.C. The invitation is signed by Charles Sumner, A.R. Spofford (Librarian of Congress), S.P. Chase (Chief Justice), Henry Wilson (Vice-President of the U.S.) , H.D. Cooke, A.S. Solomons, Arthur MacArthur, A.G. Riddle, N.P. Chipman, E.L. Stanton, Horatio King and two others. On the reverse is a signed reply from Vaughn, thanking them for the invitation and agreeing to speak at Lincoln Mall on April 2. In fine condition, with minor smudging to a few of the signatures, light edge toning. RRAuction COA.
