In part: 'I am most grateful that you let me know of this false accusation. The Chinese Communist Press is also protesting against me. A clipping from the People's Observer in Peking was sent to me by a friend in India. I called the Department of State and they advised me to write to the Chinese Embassy and make my protest. I have done so in the following terms: 'I am against Communism and I have no Communist or Pro-Communist Friends. Let me put it as plainly as that.' The similarity between the accusations of the editor in Taipei and the editor in Peking. Each accuses me of being for the other. The similarity would be amusing except that I am not amused. I wish merely to state my affection for the Chinese people, among whom I grew up, and my devotion to their welfare remains unchanged, whatever their government. If they are hungry, I shall always hope to be instrumental in getting food to them. I feel that the reason both sides are angry with me is because I do not come out for either side. At present as an American, it is not my business to enter into Chinese politics. I follow the general policy of my own government.'
