Description

WWII Japanese “Body Flag” Trophy

An unusual WWII war trophy, a cotton Japanese 'body flag' measuring 20.25 x 16.5. Stencilled at the top of the flag is '2nd Marine Div. A-1-8' along with the rank and name. A few soldiers even added their nicknames, and hometowns of 74 members of the regiment. In WWII, elements of the division served in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor and on Samoa. Then, as a full division it served in the Guadalcanal campaign, was part of the bloody assault of Tarawa for which it was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and was at Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. Most certainly this flag was 'captured' at one of the aforementioned battles by a soldier whose name appears on the flag. In fine condition, with minor soiling and stains. RRAuction COA.
