Aviator and polar explorer. Fantastic 1931 archive includes dozens of letters from those on the polar expedition to Helen Binde, a graphologist, in response to her requests for handwriting samples. Her analyses of the handwriting is also included with many of the letters. Included are: a postal telegraph on which Byrd has written 'The pen is mightier than the sword, R.E. Byrd,' in response to the request for his sample; dozens of letters written or cards signed by Byrd's colleagues including: Harry Adams, Brent Balchen, Haldor Barnes, Leland L. Barter (who writes, 'I cannot afford the price of an analysis but here is my autograph'), John J. Bayer, Arthur M. Berlin, George Hamilton Black, Quinn A. Blackburn, Christoffer Braathen, Gustav L. Brown, Kennard F. Bubier, Jacob Bursey, Joy Buys, Arnold H. Clarke (who wrote, in part, 'This sort of thing, is it complimentary?'), Francis Dana Coman, Victor Hugo Czegka, Frank T. Davies, Esmonde M. O'Brien (who wrote, in part, 'Would be pleased to receive an analysis of my handwriting, provided there is no charge,'), Alton N. Parker, Louis Reichart, Benjamin Roth, Ralph F. Shropshire (from the Buffalo Museum of Science, in part, 'It would be most interesting to have you send me an analysis of my writing.', Paul Allman Siple, Sverre Strom, John L. Sutton, Epaminondas James Demas, D.S.I Erickson, Carroll B. Foster, Jr., Edward A. Goodale (who includes a sketch, presumably of the base, in his response to Ms. Binde), Lloyd K. Grenlie, Henry T. Harrison, Jr., Harold I. June, Charles L. Kessler ('I believe this scribbling, as you call it, is pretty true of my handwriting at present'), Charles E. Lofgren, Frederick Charles Melville, Charles John McGuinness and Ashley Chadbourne McKinley. Also included in the archive is 'Highlights of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition,' a soft-cover book of photos and text regarding the journey, signed by several of the men who were there. In overall fine condition with usual age and handling wear, toning to several and fold separations to many. Some duplicates. RRAuction COA.
