Description

“One of the Rarest of All 20th Century Autographs,” or “The First American Saint”

Mother Cabrini was born in Sant'Angelo, Italy in 1850. In 1880, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, an order originally formed for the instruction of poor children. She immigrated to New York in 1889 and became a citizen in 1909, the year she signed this check. The nun founded schools, orphanages, free clinics and hospitals throughout the U.S. and Latin America. Four miracles were attributed to her from the time she died in 1917 until she was canonized in 1946, becoming the first American saint. Rare printed check signed 'Frances Xavier Cabrini.' Ink signature on a pale green. 5.25 x 2.5 Farmers and Merchants National Bank, Los Angeles, blank check. Date 'November 30, 1909' filled out in another hand, otherwise a blank check except for the signature. One of the rarest of all 20th century autographs. In fine condition with miniscule pin holes in blank borders at perimeter of check, small amount of adhesive residue and minimal paper loss at center. Signature fine. RRAuction COA.
