John A. Campbell

From 1862 to 1865, he served in the Confederacy as Assistant Secretary of War for conscription. When the War ended, Campbell was imprisoned by the Union Army for several months. He was released by order of President Johnson, moved to New Orleans and reestablished his law practice. LS signed 'J.A. Campbell,' one page, 7.5 x 9.5, attractively embossed and faintly lined Confederate States of America, War Department letterhead, January 20, 1864. In part: 'The application of James W. Watt for passport through our lines to return to Canada, forwarded by you, has been referred to General Winder for attention.' In fine condition, with light toning, wrinkling to left border due to previous matting, small separation along a vertical fold. RRAuction COA.
