David Atchinson requests a favor from the Navy

Politician and Senate leader considered by some to have been President for one day, March 4, 1849 when Polk's term had expired and Taylor refused to be sworn in on the Sabbath. ALS signed 'D. R. Atchinson,' one page, 8 x 10, March 30, 1853. Letter of recommendation to the Secretary of the Navy. In part, 'Mr. Wm. D Woods of Missouri is an applicant for the appointment of Purser in the Navy...he is a gentleman of integrity and as the State of Missouri has not asked or received many favors from your Department, I trust that Mr. Woods will succeed in his application.' In fine condition, with some stray ink marks, short concurrence in another hand at bottom of page and a few light creases. RRAuction COA.
