TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, May 21, 1997. A letter to Ian Whalley in Australia. Armstrong graciously declines an invitation to the 70th Anniversary Celebratory dinner of the Bert Hinkler England to Australia flight. In full, 'Thank you for your kind letter and invitation to attend the 70th anniversary celebratory dinner of the Bert Hinkler England to Australia flight. I recognize the importance of Mr. Hinkler to Australian aviation history. Before receiving the book you sent in '95, I had read of him in other books, particularly those relating to the Schneider Cup Races. And I have a sense of the importance of this 70th anniversary. Nevertheless, it would be a substantial monetary cost for you and/or your associates, and a substantial costs in time to me. I have been unable to convince myself that there would be a gain for either of us commensurate with the costs. As it turns out, that is a particularly busy time for me and it would be unlikely that I would be able to make it in any case. So I will decline. I do very much appreciate the courtesy of the invitation and send my best wishes for the success of the event. In fine condition, with a few light wrinkles.
