Description

DS, signed 'G. A. Custer, Brig. Genl. Cmdg,' one page, 8 x 9.75, January 14, 1864. A 'Report of Officers and men absent without leave in 2 Brig 3 Div.' One individual, the surgeon S. L. Morris, is listed; his fifteen day leave had ended on January 12. In fine condition, with a couple spots of trivial toning and two horizontal folds, neither affecting outstanding signature. At this time, Custer was the youngest General in the Union Army, two and a half years out of West Point. He had been named Brigadier General of Volunteers the previous June, and the year 1864 was to see him rise to the ranks of Major General of the Volunteers and Colonel in the regular service. Custer was about to take a leave himself and return to Monroe, Michigan to marry his childhood sweetheart. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
