Description

King of France (1574-89), born in Fontainbleau, the third son of Henry II. In 1569 he gained victories over the Huguenots, and took an active share in the massacre of St. Bartholomew (1572). In 1573 he was elected to the crown of Poland, but two years later succeeded his brother, Charles IX, on the French throne. DS, signed 'Henry,' one page, 17.75 x 13, May 1582. Document authorizing payment to Seignior de Grantrie, reimbursement for expenses incurred while ambassador to the League of the Grisons. In good condition, with scattered soiling, heavier towards edges, a 7' separation near lower right and overall wrinkling. RRAuction COA.
