Tobias Lear

A close friend and private secretary to Washington, Lear was at Washington's death bed. In 1812, Madison appointed him accountant to the war department, where he served until his death. It is believed he committed suicide, but no note was found. LS, one page, 8 x 10, November 28, 1815. Letter from the War Department concerning the suspension of the accounts of Captain C. F. Legrand, boldly signed at the conclusion by Lear. In very good condition, with several tape repairs to separations on reverse, scattered light toning and minor edge wear. RRAuction COA.
