“I take great pleasure in bearing testimony to the efficiency and gallantry of Leaft. A. G. Brackett, 5th Mass. vols.”

Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac; his distinctive whiskers were dubbed 'sideburns' in his honor. ALS signed 'A. E. Burnside,' three pages on two adjoining lightly-lined 5 x 8.25 sheets, July 15, 1865. Letter of recommendation to Secretary of War Stanton. In part, 'I take great pleasure in bearing testimony to the efficiency and gallantry of Leaft. A. G. Brackett, 5th Mass. vols...He was severely wounded during the campaign from the Rapidan to Petersburg, but returned to the field whilst he was a cripple...He is now I am glad to say quite well...He desires a posting in the regular army...and I am sure that no young man in any service is more deserving than he.' In very good condition, with partial separations to all mailing folds and some light toning and soiling. RRAuction COA.
